Workplace investigation trends come and go. Over the past fifteen years, we have made several observations. In the this blog, we share our observation of four workplace investigation trends that are of use for employers.
Establishing Clear Investigation Protocols
Defining the scope and procedures of an investigation at the outset is crucial for its success. It is essential to specify the allegations being investigated, establish a clear timeline, and adhere to a structured protocol. This practice not only helps in managing the expectations of all involved parties but also ensures that the investigation remains focused and effective. At Knibbs HR Consulting, we support organizations in crafting detailed investigation frameworks that promote thoroughness and efficiency in the investigative process. Embracing External Investigators
The trend towards using external investigators to handle allegations of workplace misconduct is growing stronger. This approach ensures that investigations are unbiased and handled by experts who are not only adept in investigative procedures but are also culturally sensitive. Employing external investigators enhances the credibility of the investigative process and meets the cultural and ethical expectations of today’s diverse workforce.
Involving Witnesses in Corrective Actions
Increasingly, there is a trend towards involving witnesses and complainants in the decision-making process for corrective actions following investigations. This collaborative approach can help devise remedies that are viewed as just and effective by all parties involved. However, it is vital for employers to carefully balance these inputs to ensure fairness and consistency across all cases. At Knibbs HR Consulting, we recommend establishing transparent guidelines on the influence witnesses can have on corrective actions to ensure decisions are impartial and equitable.
We at Knibbs HR Consulting are dedicated to assisting your organization in navigating the complexities of workplace investigations. By staying informed about these trends and adopting best practices, you can cultivate a workplace that upholds integrity and transparency.

The Importance of Restoration
Any investigation, be it internal or external, is disruptive to the organization. From receiving an allegation of inappropriate behaviour through investigation we should also remember that regardless of outcome, the individuals involved and the larger team may require additional care to reorient the workplace. Workplace restoration addresses conflicts or disruptions within a workplace to restore or improve working relationships, the overall environment, and team dynamics. This process is particularly relevant after significant conflicts or incidents, such as grievances, harassment complaints, investigation or other workplace disruptions.
